When you’ve got to move, a hundred things pop up on your to do list and you are faced with the mammoth task of deciding how and what to pack and what to throw away. Moving and packing can be a big hurdle and there are great professional movers available who are happy to take the process out of your hands and do it for you at a great price. However, if you’re one of those people who prefers to do the packing themselves, then it’s important to do it right. Organization is extremely important when packing, so it’s not just a matter of throwing your stuff in the truck. If you pack in a disorganized way, chances are that you won’t be able to place your finger on anything when you get to your destination and start unpacking. There are a few simple things everyone should keep in mind when packing.

Invest in good quality boxes when you pack and get more than you think you need. You can always recycle them if you need to move later and good quality strong boxes will ensure that you don’t end up with torn lids or broken bottoms. When you’re packing, reinforce the bottom of the box with tape to make sure you don’t have any accidents. Pack the bigger stuff first and put it at the bottom of the box. When you’re done, you can always add in smaller items in the nooks and crannies of the box to save space. Remember to label every single box. The worst way to unpack is when you have no clue where any of your things are and when you’re faced with a plethora of identical boxes that could contain anything.

For loose and delicate small items, make sure that you pack them in smaller boxes or containers before dumping them in a big box. This will make sure that your items stay organized. When you pack your furniture, you can keep clothes in your dresser drawers or keep utensils in your kitchen cabinet drawers. That way, unpacking will feel a lot simpler and faster since some of your things are already together.

Avoiding shampoo or liquid explosions is the bane of every packer. Don’t let it happen to you by following these few simple steps. Check the lid of all your liquid containers to make sure it is on tight. Tape it down securely so that it doesn’t come undone during moving or packing. Then seal the entire bottle in a Ziploc container and put it upright in a box. Avoid jostling the contents by labeling the box “this side up”. It’s best if you avoid keeping liquids in the same box as other valuables, especially papers and documents which could be irreversibly damaged in case of a spill.

Another way you can stay organized during your packing is to pack one room at a time in the same set of boxes. So, you could end up with 5 boxes for the bedroom, 4 for the kitchen and so on. This way, when you’re unpacking at your new home, all you need to do is transfer the boxes to their appropriate rooms. Unpacking will go a lot faster and look a lot cleaner.
